When the Chips are Down (Literally)

Yesterday, I found myself in the midst of a personal VUCA storm. You know those moments: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous—the kind of whirlwind where chaos reigns, and control slips through your fingers. This time, the storm took the form of a dying PC that finally decided it had done enough. In the grand scheme of things, this was a small storm, but I thought I’d write about it anyway.

The signs were all there: the black screen of death last year, a camera that stopped working, ports that gave up one by one. And finally, the last port—the one essential to keeping it alive – the one that allowed me to charge it - called it quits. My trusty PC was gone. Now, like many of us, I rely on my computer to function. So, off I went to Best Buy with a thread of hope that maybe, just maybe, the Geek Squad could work some magic.

The verdict? A hard no. The costs of resuscitation were simply not worth it. It was time for a new machine.

This wasn’t my first computer-related VUCA rodeo. The previous black screen of death taught me the value of being prepared. Luckily, my historical files were already backed up in the cloud. Before heading out, I backed up my current files on Dropbox and saved all my login credentials on a thumb drive—just in case. It was my version of a VUCA survival kit.

When I brought the new PC home, I expected the setup process to be tedious, but surprisingly, it was a breeze. I signed into my accounts, restored my files, and set it up just the way I wanted before the battery on the old PC fully gave up. It was a small victory in the face of an unexpected challenge.

Here’s What I Learned from this Situation:

Anticipate the Storm: Just like the signs of a failing PC, we often see the indicators of looming challenges in our lives and businesses. The key is to pay attention and prepare—backup your data, your plans, and your mindset.

Adapt Quickly: When things go sideways, adaptability is your best friend. Knowing when to let go of the old and embrace the new can turn a potential disaster into an opportunity for improvement.

Trust the Process: Even in a storm, there’s a process. Setting up the new PC wasn’t about starting from scratch; it was about transferring what was valuable and letting go of the rest. The same goes for navigating change in our lives—hold onto what works, let go of what doesn’t, and trust that you can handle the transition.

Celebrate the Wins: Big or small, every success is worth celebrating. Setting up my new PC without a hitch was a reminder that even in chaos, there are moments of triumph.

In a VUCA world, change is inevitable. But with a mindset geared towards preparation, adaptability, and resilience, you can not only weather the storms but come out the other side stronger, smarter, and ready for whatever comes next.

So, here’s to embracing the unexpected, one storm at a time.
